Who Is Jayce in Riftbound?
Jayce is one of the nine confirmed Legends in Vendetta, Riftbound’s fourth set. He sits in the Mind domain only, which is unusual among Vendetta’s Legends since most pair two domains together. His champion unit progresses through three stages as the game goes on: Brilliant Inventor, then Hammer in Hand, then Defender of Tomorrow. His identity is built entirely around Gear cards and getting more use out of them than your opponent gets out of theirs.
Jayce’s Legend Ability: The Gear Engine
Jayce’s Legend ability has three connected parts, and they only make sense once you see how they build on each other.
Empower cost: 2 Energy, 2 wild runes. This puts Jayce into his Empowered state, and it can only be used if he is not already Empowered. This is one of the more expensive Empower costs confirmed in Vendetta so far.
Base ability: for 1 Energy and exhausting Jayce, you ready a Gear. A Gear that has already been used this turn (exhausted) becomes ready again, meaning it can be used a second time before your turn ends.
Empowered ability: the same cost, 1 Energy and exhausting Jayce, now readies 2 Gear instead of 1. Once Jayce is Empowered, every activation is worth double.
Here is what that looks like at the table. Say you have two Gear cards in play and both are already exhausted from earlier this turn. With Jayce Empowered, you spend 1 Energy, exhaust Jayce, and both Gear cards become ready again. You can now use both of them a second time in the same turn, for a fraction of what it would normally cost to get that much value.

How Jayce Plays
Jayce wants a Gear-heavy deck, ideally with two or more Gear cards active at once so that a single Empowered activation is readying multiple pieces of value rather than just one. The tension in playing him well is timing the Empower activation itself. At 2 Energy and 2 Wild Power, it is not cheap, and until you pay it, Jayce is only readying a single Gear per activation. Being Mind only also means a narrower rune base than a dual-domain Legend, which affects how you build your rune line going in.
Is Jayce Competitive?
Vendetta has not launched yet, so there is no tournament data on Jayce. Gear combo is a known archetype from earlier sets, and Jayce is the first Legend built specifically around it, but how he performs at events is unconfirmed until results come in after July 31. This section will be updated with real results once they exist.
What can be said now: Gear combo decks reward players who like sequencing and setup over straightforward aggression. If that style already appeals to you from earlier sets, Jayce is a reasonable bet.
